In rebellion of fire with ascent of qi, there is inhibition of the throat, and to stop the rebellion and descend qi, mai men dong tang governs.

Clears heat and nourishes the lung and stomach, arrest counter flow and relieve cough. It treats deficiency of yin and fluids in the stomach and lungs that result in counter flow qi with symptoms such as cough, nausea, dry inhibited throat, phlegm that is sticky and difficult to expectorate and hoarseness.

Mai men dong cold sweet nourishes the mother of Metal. Mai men generates yin and fluids while ban xia moves pathological fluids just like ren shen and bai zhu in li zhong wan. This formula is legendary in nourishing yin of the lung and throat while supporting the tai yin to tonify deficiency.

Mai men dong, Ophiopononis radix is sweet tonifying and nourishing of the spleen and lung. Mai men dong is sweet, slightly bitter and cold and tonifies upper burner yin while eliminating mental unrest and vexation.

It tonifies qi and nourishes yin and mildly clears heat. It replenishes fluids and strengthens yin as the main component of blood. Mai men dong nourishes nutritive fluids and clears deficiency heat of the upper burner and buffers Wood. This clears the agitation at night and night sweats or the five center heat.

Ren shen, Ginseng radix is sweet tonifying and nourishing of the spleen, lungs, heart, and kidney. It nourishes yin fluids and therefore is the foremost qi and yin tonic.

The yin fluids from ren shen moderate excessive movement by anchoring yang with yin. It raises the original qi and gathering qi. It strengthens righteous qi and righteous qi is also called true qi and is a combination of original qi and gathering qi. All are dependent on the qi of shao yin and tai yin. Which in turn are dependent on the jue yin and shao yang for the ministerial fire in all three burners.

Ban xia, Pinelliae rhizoma is pungent dispersing of the liver blood and the ministerial fire in the san jiao. It is pungent dispersing of the cold and dampness in the stomach domain, spleen and lung. It transforms tai yin damp phlegm generated from excessive and stagnant cold dampness and counteracts nausea and adverse flow.

Ban xia is used in this formula for the counter flow qi of the stomach and to ensure the high dose of the mai men dong descends.

Geng mi, nonglutinous rice is sweet nourishing and warm. It adds material to anchor yang and support nutritive in blood.

Geng mi is used in the Shang han lun to regenerate fluid loss due to heat as seen in formulas like mai men dong and zhu ye shi gao tang.

Da zao, Jujubae fructus is sweet tonifying and moderating. It tonifies and nourishes the stomach domain, spleen, lungs, and heart. It directly nourishes the shao yin heart.

Da zao adds material to the tai yin middle to generate heart blood while building spleen qi to strengthen lung and heart qi to revive the pulse beat.

Zhi gan cao, Glycyrrhizae radix prep is sweet tonifying and nourishing of all organs but especially the heart.

Zhi gan cao is sweet and mildly warm tonifying and nourishing of yin fluids. It nourishes yin fluids in the tai yin and shao yin. It calms wind in the jue yin.
