When shao yin disease has just started, but there is heat effusion and the pulse is sunken, ma huang xi xin fu zi tang governs.
It treats yang deficiency, no sweating, extreme cold and mild fever, severe tiredness, used for frozen water that is not moving.
This formula treats external cold as well as internal cold deficiency patterns. Tai yang and shao yin are paired systems and this formula illustrates the need for more yang tonifying of yang qi to clear the cold on the surface. This formula is the most yang warm dispersing formula in the Shang Han Za Bing Lun.
Ma huang, Ephedrae herba is bitter descending of the lung. It is pungent dispersing of the imperial and ministerial fire. It enters the lung and bladder channel, it opens the surface, and dispels the cold on the surface. Further it dissipates lung qi and pacifies panting through opening the closed lung qi.
Ma huang is not enough to promote sweating and is therefore used with fu zi and xi xin to free the congested nutritive and the flow of yang.
Xi xin, Asari herba is pungent dispersing of the liver blood and the ministerial fire. It is pungent dispersing of the heart, kidneys and lungs. It is pungent dispersing of the tai yang channel.
Warm, pungent and aromatic. It dispels cold, treats shao yin and tai yin headaches.
Works together with ma huang to treat fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Xi xin together with ma huang disperses the tai yang surface and frees qi by opening the channels. Combined with fu zi it eliminates shao yin cold and warms the interior.
Fu zi, Aconiti radix lateralis praeparata is pungent dispersing of liver blood and the ministerial fire in the san jiao. It is pungent dispersing of the heart and kidneys. It is pungent dispersing of the tai yang channels. It is pungent dispersing of excess water.
Fu zi warms the yang and clears internal cold due to imperial yang deficiency. It helps ma huang to disperse the surface without damaging the yang qi while warming shao yin without congesting interior evils.
It warms the original qi of the kidneys and the gathering qi of the lungs and heart. Fu zi infuses the body with fire and promotes water metabolism through the descent of fire into the water reservoirs of the body to draw qi from the body.
