Fang ji di huang tang treats diseases of mania with erratic moving about, and continuous talking to oneself, without cold or fever, and with a floating pulse.

It treats a yin level pattern of yin and blood deficiency. It is a taxation formula. It nourishes the Water element to give birth to Wood.

Sheng di huang, Rehmanniae radix recens is bitter draining of heat in the liver blood and the ministerial fire, heart and kidney. It is sweet nourishing and tonifying of the liver blood and kidney. It enters the heart and kidney channel and nourishes nutritive of blood while clearing heat from the yin layers. Used fresh it is cooling and nourishes yin.

It replenishes the kidney water resources to strengthen liver blood and contain heat due to the deficiency. The increased fluids of the water element moisten the liver and pericardium which draw fluids upward to the upper burner to harmonize the heart’s imperial fire.

Gui zhi, Cinnamomi cassiae ramulus is pungent sweet and warm dispersing of the imperial and ministerial fire. It warms and tonifies the shao yin and jue yin. In doing so it warms and tonifies the whole body.

Zhi gan cao, Glycyrrhizae radix prep is sweet tonifying and nourishing of all organs but especially the heart.

Zhi gan cao is sweet and mildly warm tonifying and nourishing of yin fluids. It nourishes yin fluids in the tai yin and shao yin. It calms wind in the jue yin.

Gui zhi and gan cao tonify heart yang with pungent and sweet.

Fang ji, Stephaniae radix is pungent dispersing of the lung, spleen, bladder and kidney. It is bitter draining of fluids in the lung, spleen, bladder and kidney.

Fang feng, Saposhnikoviae radix is sweet tonifying and nourishing of the spleen and lungs. It is sweet tonifying and nourishing of the tai yang and yang ming channels. It is pungent dispersing of the jue yin ministerial fire. It is called the moisturizer of the wind herbs.

Fang feng connects the tai yin to the tai yang and yang ming channels. It promotes the flow of protective wei qi on the surface. It stirs and awakens the surface qi to increase readiness against possible external invasion. Warm and pungent, it disperses cold from tai yang, while being sweet it mildly strengthens surface nutritive ying qi.

The way is cleared by fang feng and fang ji and filled by sheng di huang.
