This is a version of bai tou weng tang with ejiao and zhi gan cao for damp heat diarrhea with bleeding due to heat in the jue yin blood level. The dampness causes the heat to accumulate which warms the ministerial fire in the lower burner.

Bai tou weng, Pulsatilla radix enters the yang ming, jue yin and shao yang and is therefore used when there is heat affecting the jue yin blood. Bai tou weng cools and clears heat and damp heat to preserve yin and blood.

Huang bai, Phellodendri cortex is bitter draining and cooling of heat and dampness in the kidneys, bladder, small and large intestine. It cools heat in the ministerial fire of the san jiao. It is cool bitter clearing of heat to cool blood to preserve yin and blood.

Huang lian, Coptidis rhizome is bitter draining of heat in the ministerial and imperial fire. It is bitter draining of heat in the heart and san jiao. It is bitter draining of heat and dampness in the stomach domain. It is cold bitter clearing of heat and damp heat to cool fluids and to cool blood to preserve yin and blood.

Qin pi, Fraxini cortex is bitter draining of excess warm fluids in the stomach domain and bladder. It is astringing of fluids in the stomach domain. It clears heat, resolves toxins and stops dysentery.

Zhi gan cao, Glycyrrhizae radix prep is sweet and mildly warm tonifying and nourishing of yin fluids. It balances the pungent gui zhi with its sweet moderation and nourishing. It nourishes yin fluids in the tai yin and shao yin. It calms wind in the jue yin.

Ejiao, Asini corii colla is sweet tonifying and nourishing of the stomach and spleen. It directly nourishes the liver, kidney and heart blood. It is salty softening of yin and blood. 

It strongly replenishes the water element through its animal nature and kidney and heart affinity. Ejiao also controls bleeding during movement of blood.
