In shao yin disease, clear food diarrhea indicates cold and exterior heat. There is reverse flow of the extremities, the pulse is faint and verging on expiry, but generalized aversion to cold is absent. When the person has a red facial complexion, or possibly abdominal pain, or dry retching, or sore throat, or the diarrhea ceases and the pulse does not move outward, tong mai si ni tang governs.

It is a stronger version of si ni tang.
